School Counselor/Title IX Coordinator

What's happening this year

Short term individual and group counseling will be offered to all students. If you would like your child to see me, just let me know! Students may also be referred to counseling groups by family and/or teachers. Group topics vary and are determined by the needs of the school. Topics can include but are not limited to friendship, anger, organization and test taking skills. Each week informal lunch groups to help children work on social skills are offered. Your child may be invited to lunch by some of the members in the group to serve as peer role models to help members learn appropriate and health social skills from others.

All students K-8 will be given developmental guidance lessons in their classrooms every other week. The lessons will include kindness, goal settings, career exploration and development, study skills, understanding feelings and emotions, mindfulness, relaxation skills for anxiety, understanding feelings and how to appropriately express them and healthy choices.

We will also continue to use restorative practices to promote positive and behavioral changes in our students. We will be doing this through "conference circles." As a reminder, conference circles are voluntary, vary in duration and size, and strive to include all those affected by the students’ behavior. We hope that with the learning and teaching of these skills we will continue to promote a positive and safe school climate and will benefit our students in the future.

As a school counselor, privacy and confidentiality are important to me. I maintain confidential relationships with students, families, and faculty. I share information on a “need-to-know” basis only and will assess what information needs to be shared with the best interest of our students in mind!

Please contact Emily MacEwen, school counselor at (860) 376-2325 ext. 127 or emacewen@voluntownct.org with any questions or concerns. Thank you!

Be a Mentor!

Join the VES Mentoring Program

Why Mentor?

  • It’s fun, rewarding, and takes only a half hour per week

  • Children in need of one to one attention are now waiting for a mentor

  • Children who have a mentor do better in school and in the community. It’s a fact.

  • One person really can make a difference

What do Mentors do?

  • Take an active interest in the life of a student

  • Serve as a guide, coach, and an understanding friend

  • Model patience, confidence, warmth, dependability and flexibility

  • Build a connection that enhances self worth, sharing of ideas, and offers support

  • Meet with mentees weekly for about 30 minutes

  • Play games, read together, have lunch together, or participate in some other similar activity.

How do I get involved?

To find out more about volunteering, please call or email Emily MacEwen, School Counselor, at (860) 376-2325 ext. 127 or emacewen@voluntownct.org.
